What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin, created in 2009 by the mysterious figure Satoshi Nakamoto, is the first cryptocurrency ever developed. It revolutionized financial transactions by enabling people to send digital money directly to each other without the need for traditional banking institutions. Often referred to as 'digital gold,' Bitcoin is valued not only for its pioneering role but also for its scarcity and security, which have established it as the largest and most recognized cryptocurrency in the world. Bitcoin's independence from centralized control promotes financial freedom and innovation.

What people use Bitcoin for

  • Hold itMany people keep it for the long term.
  • Cash outSell it and withdraw to your bank.
  • Swap itTrade it for other coins in the app.
  • Buy regularlySet up a recurring buy in a couple of taps.

What is DCA?

Start small, and keep it steady.

What is DCA, and how would it have worked for Bitcoin?

DCA stands for dollar-cost averaging. You buy a fixed amount at regular times, like $25 every week, whatever the price is. When the price is low the same money buys more, and when it's high it buys less, so you don't have to guess the right moment.

  • Why people use itIt takes out the guesswork, and small regular amounts are easier to keep up.
  • What it can't doIt doesn't guarantee a profit. If the price keeps falling, you can still lose money.
  • Set it and let it runA recurring buy in the app repeats on its own. Check in now and then, and change the amount if your plans change.

A quick example

$100 a month for 3 months, with made-up prices

MonthYou put inPriceYou get (BTC)
January$100$50,0000.00200
February$100$40,0000.00250
March$100$60,0000.00167
Total$3000.00617

Same $100 each month: the lower the price, the more BTC you get.

Your average price: $48,649

That's lower than the $50,000 average of the three prices, because the same $100 bought more when the price was low.

The risk people usually mean is price: BTC can move sharply in a single day. How Bitcoin is run also matters, so read what it is above. Only put in what you'd be comfortable losing while you learn.

Is Bitcoin a good investment for beginners?

No one can promise that — BTC's price can rise or fall sharply, and past performance is never a guarantee. What you can control is how you invest: many beginners buy a small amount on a regular schedule (called dollar-cost averaging) instead of trying to time the market, and only invest what they can afford to lose. Treat Bitcoin as a long-term way to learn, not a get-rich-quick bet.

Can I buy a small amount?

Yes. You don't need to buy a whole BTC. Coins are divisible to many decimal places, so you can buy a small part of one.

Where is my BTC stored?

When you buy through Rumos, your BTC is kept with our regulated custody partner BitGo, in segregated accounts. You manage it in the Rumos app.

What can I actually do with it?

Hold it, swap it for other coins in the app, or set up a weekly recurring buy. Sending to an outside wallet isn't available yet.
